MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR SHIRLEY MARX
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Shirley Marx on March 25, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman ofthe 391" Ward; and
WHEREAS, Shirley was born on October 21, 1930. She was a long time resident of Wilmette, Illinois and more recently Chicago, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Shirley met and married the love of her life, Edward M. Marx, in 1952 and from this union were blessed with seven amazing children; and
WHEREAS, Edward purchased Economy Moving and Transfer, a firm established by his father Michael in 1919, which later became New World Van Lines. For the next 43 years, Shirley and Edward worked side by side building the company until Edward passed away in 1995; and
WHEREAS, Following the loss of her beloved husband, Shirley Marx, supported by her family, assumed responsibility of the company's leadership and successfully served as co-founder and chairman of the New World Van Lines board and humbly embraced organizations that promoted women in leadership; and
WHEREAS, Through hard work and passion, New World Van Lines has just celebrated 100 years in business and has become one of the top fifteen moving companies in the country; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, as further demonstration of commitment to be responsive to the needs of corporations and customers eager to support a diverse supply chain, New World Van Lines earned the designation as a Women's Business Enterprise by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation's largest third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women; and
WHEREAS, in 2011, Shirley Marx received the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association Quality Service Award as a testament to her fine work serving those in need of moving services; and
