RESOLUTION CONDEMNING COMPARISONS OF VACCINE AND MASK MANDATES TO NAZISM

WHEREAS, The Holocaust was a unique historical event; the systematic state-sponsored killing of over six million Jewish men, women, and children - and other victims targeted by the Nazi state - by Nazi Germany and its collaborators priorto and during World War II.

WHEREAS, millions of victims were killed in Nazi extermination camps primarily through poison gas -either in permanent installations or in gas vans. The six main extermination camps were Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

WHEREAS, at these camps, many victims were told by the Nazis that they were to receive showers and then directed to chambers were they were, instead, killed in groups via poison gas. Nazis also painted the logo of the Red Cross on to the backs of vans to lure victims into mobile poison gas killing chambers.

WHEREAS, there are survivors of this terrible Nazi Holocaust in Chicagoland today who are valued members of our community and who contribute greatly to the study and commemoration of this period of history and impart its lessons to younger generations.

WHEREAS, there has been a shocking and offensive rise in public statements - locally and nationally -which equate or compare the efforts to promote potentially lifesaving masks and COVID-19 vaccines with the tactics and deception used by the Nazis to murder their victims.

WHEREAS, these public statements are both historically inaccurate and deeply offensive to the memory of Holocaust victims, their families, and survivors.

Michele Smith, 43rd Ward

Debra Silverstein, 50th Ward

Therefore, be it resolved, that the Chicago City Council strongly condemns any statements which equate or compare the promotion of COVID-19 vaccines or masks with the motivations and tactics of the Nazi murderers who perpetuated the Holocaust.
