RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Honorable Mel Richard Jiganti has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Judge Jiganti is survived by his children Therese (Jack), Mark (Veronica), Jeanine (Brian), John (Suzanne) and Paul (Carol), his sister in law Dorothy and in laws Dan and Dorothy, grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Judge Jiganti was born July 16,1932, to Emil Henry and Elma Olga Jiganti in Chicago, Illinois; and

WHERAS, He met the love of his life, the late Mary Ann Jiganti, in second grade and married her at 23; and

WHEREAS, Judge Jiganti graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep, received his Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of Notre Dame in 1954 and his Juris Doctor Degree from DePaul University in 1956; and

WHEREAS, He served with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958; and

WHEREAS, Judge Jiganti became an Illinois state court judge at 30, serving in each division ofthe circuit court and for 19 years as an Appellate Court Justice; and

WHERAS, In 1979, Judge Jiganti became an Adjunct Professor for Loyola University School of Law until 1992; and

WHEREAS, He was a member of various organizations such as the American Judicature Society, Illinois State Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association and Illinois Judges Association; and

WHEREAS, Judge Jiganti enjoyed many sports including golf, handball, tennis, running and skiing, traveling with his late wife Mary Ann to more than 55 countries, opera, intellectual pursuits and dense books and was known for his independence of thought and early feminism; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Judge Mel Richard Jiganti imparts a legacy of judicial opinions, compassion, devotion to family and unwavering faith in God; now, therefore
