RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Barry Zorthian has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Barry Zorthian was the loving husband for sixty-two years of the late Margaret; and
WHEREAS, Barry Zorthian was the much-adored father of Greg and Steve and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Turkey, Barry Zorthian graduated from Yale University and served as a Marine Corps artillery officer in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Barry Zorthian served for thirteen years with Voice of America where he reported on the Korean War and rose to become Program Director; and
WHEREAS, In 1964 Barry Zorthian was named head of the Joint U.S. Public Affairs Office and was dispatched to Saigon by President Lyndon B. Johnson to serve as press spokesperson during the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, In 1965 Barry Zorthian was given the diplomatic rank of Minister; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Barry Zorthian serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Barry Zorthian will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Barry Zorthian imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of January, 2011, do hereby commemorate Barry Zorthian for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Barry Zorthian.
