RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita was a legendary member of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team and the loving husband for 55 years of Jill; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita was the much-adored father of Meg, Scott, Jane and Christopher and the grandfather of nine to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born Stanislav Guoth in Sokolce, Slovak Republic, Stanley "Stan" Mikita was the dear brother of Jurag, Viera and Irene; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita moved to Canada as a young boy and was adopted by his aunt and uncle who have him their surname; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita played 21 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks and during his career set franchise records that still stand, including 1,467 points and 926 assists; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita's 541 goals rank second only behind his teammate Bobby Hull; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of his many accomplishments, the Chicago Blackhawks retired Stanley "Stan" Mikita's No. 21 jersey to the rafters and he was inducted in 1983 to the Hockey Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, As a father, Stanley "Stan" Mikita taught his children the values of compassion and patience, and often reminded them that it does not cost anything to be nice to people; and

WHEREAS, Off the ice, Stanley "Stan" Mikita was generous with his fame and status as a sports star and often appeared at local churches and charitable events; and
WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita was an original supporter of Special Olympics in Chicago and was present 50 years ago at Soldier Field to witness the birth of this remarkable movement; and

WHEREAS, Stanley "Stan" Mikita always treated his teammates like family and welcomes new players, with advice and encouragement; and
