RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A PROGRESS REPORT FROM
DEPARTMENT OF STREETS & SANITATION
WHEREAS, In a recent austerity measure, the Mayor directed the Department of Streets & Sanitation to eschew its 146 year policy of ward by ward refuse collection and establish a grid system of routes bordered by main streets and natural boundaries in the name of efficiency and cost savings; and
WHEREAS, Many Alderman and Ward Superintendents have questioned the efficacy and accountability of such a model and worry if this will adversely impact their ability to provide assistance with the daily emergencies that occur within a given ward; and
WHEREAS, It behooves this legislative body to closely monitor such a departure from a history of refuse collection that dates back to 1866; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the undersigned members of the City Council gathered together this 12th Day of December, 2012 AD, do hereby request the Chair of the Budget and Governmental Affairs committee to convene a public hearing as soon as it can be scheduled to take testimony of the current Commissioner and staff of Streets & Sanitation providing a progress report and statistics regarding projected vs. actual refuse and recycling collection results as a result of the transition to the grid system as well as its impact on available fleet and staff to continue servicing street corner trash receptacles and other unexpected special sanitation services.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That suitable copies of this resolution be prepared and presented
to the Chair of the Budget and Government Affairs Committee and the Commissioner of Streets
& Sanitation
