RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Gary Shapiro has announced his retirement from the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois following forty-three years of distinguished service; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A veteran prosecutor, Gary Shapiro was named Acting United States Attorney following the departure of Patrick J. Fitzgerald in 2012 and served in that role until the naming of Zachary T. Fardon; and
WHEREAS, Gary Shapiro previously served for fourteen years as First Assistant United States Attorney; and
WHEREAS, As First Assistant United State Attorney beginning in 1998 and in his earlier role as Criminal Chief, Gary Shapiro played a leading role in supervising a variety of investigations and prosecutions involving international terrorism and terrorism financing, public corruption, corporate fraud, and organized crime, including violent crime and narcotics and gang prosecutions; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Gary Shapiro managed more than 300 employees, including approximately 170 Assistant U.S. Attorneys in Chicago and Rockford; and
WHEREAS, Prior to serving as Chief of the Criminal Division and the First Assistant, Gary Shapiro worked in the Department of Justice in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, From 1984 until 1990, Gary Shapiro oversaw all organized crime prosecutions in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, The Northern District of Illinois covers 18 counties across the top tier of the state, with a population of approximately nine million people; and
WHEREAS, A native of New York City, Gary Shapiro was raised in Dallas, Texas and graduated from Rice University and the University of Texas School of Law; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Gary Shapiro serve as an example to all; now, therefore
