ORDER

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago stands in unwavering solidarity with the people of the sovereign nation of the Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia's unprovoked invasion and war against their democracy and sovereign right to exist as an independent nation; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago officially formalized the Chicago Sister Cities International Program on February 28, 1990 via Executive Order 90-1 signed by former Mayor Richard M. Daley; and,

WHEREAS, twenty-nine cities across the globe have sister city status with the City of Chicago, including Kyiv, Ukraine and Moscow, Russia; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago is proud to reaffirm our Sister Cities linkage with several cities in North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations: Birmingham, United Kingdom; Hamburg, Germany; Paris, France; Milan, Italy; Toronto, Canada; Warsaw, Poland; Athens, Greece; Prague, Czech Republic; and Vilnius, Lithuania; and,

WHEREAS, Switzerland, Japan, Serbia, Israel, Australia, Ireland, Ghana, Colombia, Republic of Korea, and China have also condemned the actions of Russia against the people of the Ukraine while Mexico, South Africa, Jordan and Pakistan, which also have Sister Cities participants, have given little to no reaction to the current events; now therefore,

BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, that the Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events shall immediately revoke the Sister Cities status of Moscow, Russia as a participant in the Chicago Sister Cities Program; and,

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, that the Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is additionally ordered to revoke any Sister City status for any participating nation that vocalizes support for this unprovoked aggression against the Ukrainian people; and,
