ORDINANCE

 

WHEREAS, Chicago is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, The City of Chicago embraces all cultural ethnicities and heritages that for generations have contributed to the fabric of our City's neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Chicago, as a Welcoming City, is also one of the most immigrant-friendly cities in the country and a leader in progressive policies that protects undocumented individuals and families; and

WHEREAS, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has embarked on a hateful and racist campaign against immigrants and minorities; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump's mean-spirited remarks about Chicago during the first presidential debate misrepresents the City and discredits the positive attributes of the City; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump has a history of blaming Latinos and African Americans for violent crime; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump's complete disregard for civil liberties traces back to the 1970s when his company was sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination against black people who wanted to rent apartments in various boroughs of New York; and

WHEREAS, During his bid for the Republican Presidential nomination, Donald Trump made racist remarks against Mexican and Latin American immigrants by publicly calling this population "rapists" and "killers"; and

WHEREAS, In May 2016, Donald Trump implied that Gonzalo Curiel, a federal judge presiding over a class action case against Trump University, would not be able to effectively carry out his job responsibilities because of his Mexican heritage; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump attacked a Muslim family after they spoke against his racism and bigotry at the 2016 Democratic National Convention; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump has refused to condemn white supremacists who support his 2016 presidential campaign; and

 

WHEREAS, Donald Trump's offensive and hateful language has contributed to hate crimes against Latinos and other minority groups; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump's propensity for divisive language and hate speech goes against the values and principles of the City of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, The Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago hereby condemn Donald Trump for his hateful and hurtful rhetoric against immigrants, Latinos, and other minorities; and

WHEREAS, The City of Chicago will not tolerate Donald Trump's irresponsible platform of anger and hate against immigrants and minorities, now therefore,

 

 

 

BE IT ORDAINED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

SECTION 1. The Commissioner of the Department of Transportation shall take all necessary action for the repeal of the ordinance designating "Trump Plaza" as the east side of North Wabash Avenue from East Illinois Street to the main branch of the Chicago River, on page 80257 in the June 28, 2006 City Council Journal of the Proceedings and removal of any signs designating the area as such.

SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage.
