Expression of sympathy and support for victims and families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, On the afternoon of February 14, 2018, a lone gunman carried out a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, leaving fourteen students and three educators dead; and

WHEREAS, Fourteen other shooting victims were rushed to area hospitals after sustaining serious gunshot wounds; and

WHEREAS, The perpetrator entered the school building armed with a semi-automatic rifle and multiple magazines intent on carrying out what became one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this tragic event by Alderman Edward M. Burke and Alderman Patrick O'Connor; and

WHEREAS, Amid the chaos, a geography teacher, Scott Beigel gave his life as he unlocked a classroom to allow students to take refuge from the gunman; and

WHEREAS, At the same time, Aaron Feis, an assistant football coach and security guard, sacrificed his life as he shielded two students from gunfire and certain death; and

WHEREAS, School Athletic Director Chris Hixon was shot and killed in an attempt to shield fleeing students after hearing the first sound of gunfire; and

WHEREAS, Student Peter Wang, a Junior ROTC cadet, was shot and killed as he helped students escape the gunfire by holding an exit door open and directing students to safety. Peter was posthumously awarded the ROTC Medal for Heroism and admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point; and

WHEREAS, We honor the heroism of Scott Beigel, Aaron Feis, Chris Hixon, and Peter Wang, who sacrificed their lives to safeguard others; and

WHEREAS, Surveillance footage revealed the identity of the perpetrator who was apprehended without incident two miles from the high school in Coral Springs; and

WHEREAS, Student survivors, supported by the community, organized a movement called "Never Again MSD" that has gained national attention across social media channels with the hash-tag #NeverAgain; and

WHEREAS, In support of legislative action to impose restrictions on the availability of semi-automatic weapons, the Women's March Network, through a program called Youth EMPOWER, plans a seventeen-minute school walkout on March 14, 2018, which is one minute for each person killed in the Parkland massacre; and

WHEREAS, A nationwide student demonstration planned for March 24, 2018 in Washington D.C. is named "March for Our Lives"; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of February, 2018, do hereby express our deepest sorrow and sympathy to the families of the fallen, our prayers for a swift recovery to the injured, and our support for the Women's March Network, Youth EMPOWER, March for Our Lives, and all efforts to open a meaningful dialogue to identify solutions to end the scourge of school shootings in the United States; and

Alderman, 40th Ward

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Ty Thompson of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
