Tribute to late victims of Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, During the early morning hours of June 12, 2016, a gunman opened fire at an Orlando, Florida nightclub, Pulse, killing forty-riine innocent victims and injuring fifty-three others in a mass terror attack and hate crime; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this tragic event by Aldermen Edward M. Burke, Thomas Tunney, James Cappleman, Raymond Lopez, Deb Mell, and Carlos Ramirez-Rosa; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 320 people were gathered, celebrating life and dancing inside the Pulse nightclub, a popular gay venue, when the establishment announced last-call; and
WHEREAS, Shortly before 2. a.m., the 29-year-old gunman, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and pistol, drove up in a van and approached the club on foot, stormed the club and opened fire beginning his deadly attack; and
WHEREAS, At 2:02 a.m. a security officer working inside the club heard the gunfire and called for help prompting a massive response by the Orlando Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Arriving at 2:08 a.m., the Orlando Police SWAT Team officers entered tlie club and exchanged gunfire with the perpetrator, causing him to barricade himself inside a bathroom; and
WHEREAS, Beginning at 2:35 a.m., the gunman telephoned 9-1-1 several times and during one of the calls pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State; and
WHEREAS, From 2:48 a.m. until 3:24 a.m., hostage negotiators communicated with the gunman who claimed to have a bomb attached to his vest; and
WHEREAS, At approximately 5 a.m., after a three-hour stand-off, the SWAT team used an armored vehicle to smash down a door to the club and a shootout ensued, which resulted in tlie death of the gunman and an end to the standoff; and
WHEREAS, The victims killed in the senseless and brutal attack included: Stanley Almodovar, III, 23; Amanda Alvear, 25; Oscar A. Aracena-Montero, 26; Rodolfo Ayala-Ayala, 33; Antonio Davon Brown, 29; Darryl Roman Burt II, 29; Angel L. WHEREAS, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden traveled to Orlando on June 16, 2016 to pay their respects to tlie victims and families of the worst mass shooting in American history, calling their grief "beyond description"; and
WHEREAS, in this time of grief, the City of Chicago stands in support of families and friends in Orlando, Florida, and across the globe, who are left trying to make sense of our profound loss; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago denounces all acts of violence, and in this case, an act of violence targeting a community of people based on who they love, based on race, and based on their country of origin; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago feels hurt and angry but not threatened and the strength of the numbers show the determination and solidarity of the LGBT community in the United States and of our unity with tlie LGBT community globally; and
WHEREAS, While the City of Chicago's Pride parade last year was a celebration of equal marriage nationwide; this year's celebration will be a parade of solidarity with those in Florida and defiance against those who would seek to use violence, terrorism and hatred to force people to change the way they live their lives; and,
WHEREAS, we commend and are grateful for tlie heroic actions of the Orlando Police, first responders, friends, family and bystanders who stood in front of their loved ones, charged into danger, helped save lives, and then waited for hours to donate blood; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-second day of June, 2016, do hereby express our sympathy to the families of the slain victims and the survivors of this tragic attack; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable John Hugh "Buddy" Dyer, Mayor of the City of Orlando, Florida on behalf of the people of Orlando, Florida.
