RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," which takes place annually, with the goal of raising awareness about the disease and to raise funds for research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure; and

 

WHEREAS, a woman living in the US has a 12.4%, or a 1-in-8, lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer; and

 

WHEREAS, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes in the United States and breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide; and

 

WHEREAS, breast cancer affects more than 1.5 million women each year. Over the next 10 years, over 16 million women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis, and approximately 1/3 of those women will develop advanced diseases; and

 

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for 30 percent of newly diagnosed cancers in the U.S.; and

 

WHEREAS, as of January 1, 2016, more than 3.5 million women with a history of breast cancer were alive in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2016, the City of Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) invested $635,000 to provide additional mammography services at three Cook County Health & Hospital Service locations. CDPH further provided $100,000 to Roseland Community Hospital and Mercy Hospital and Health Center in an effort to improve breast health services available to low income women citywide; and

 

WHEREAS, as we observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we pause to remember all those who are fighting this disease, including families and friends, advocates, researchers and health care providers as well as those we have lost to breast cancer, now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council stand with the Chicago Women's Caucus to acknowledge the work and efforts of Chicago's

 

many breast cancer health and support advocacy groups, support centers, diagnosis and treatment providers who work tirelessly toward the betterment of women's health.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council call for a hearing before the Committee on Health and Environmental Protection to consider the state of access to breast health services and support in the City of Chicago.
